Collection consists primarily of Aaron Brown's official and personal correspondence . Includes extensive correspondence related to Brown's service in the 3rd Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. Also contains material related to Brown's terms in the Iowa House of Representatives and State Senate, as well as his two terms as Register of the State Land Office.

Aaron Brown was born into a slave owning family in Mississippi, but his father freed his slaves and moved north. One of Brown's brothers was murdered in Kansas for his anti-slavery views. Brown joined the 3rd Iowa Volunteer Infantry and advanced from second lieutenant to colonel of the regiment. He commanded the regiment at Vicksburg and Jackson. After the war he served in both houses of the Iowa state legislature and was Register of the State Land Office. He died in Mitchellville in 1904. ...
